Edison EMTs Assist in Haiti Crisis

DAJABÓN, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Three members of Edison Squad 2 traveled to the Dominican Republic recently to take part on a rural health clinic project serving refugees from the Haitian humanitarian crisis. Captain Neel Mehta, MICP, EMT-Specialist Jason Chen, and EMT-Specialist Keith Shipley spent a week on the Haiti border with Waves of Health, a medical outreach organization with the intent on lending EMS skills to the clinic and bring sorely needed healthcare to one of the poorest areas of the Western Hemisphere.

Captain Mehta descrbed the experience as “humbling” as the group treated over 1,600 patients during the course of the week. Tired, dirty and emotionally fatigued, the group, all members of the Squad 2 STAR special operations unit, hopes to return in the fall with the intent of helping to establish a permanent local EMS system.

Details of the experience were published in a recent article in the
Metuchen-Edison Sentinel newspaper.
