BLS Division Rescue Services Special Services Administration Vital Signs

The BLS Division of Squad 2 is the heart of squad field operations. Providing round-the-clock Basic Life Support (BLS) and Transport service are four fully equipped ambulances staffed by a minimum of two NJDOH-certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). An additional two crew members (Ambulance Attendants) certified in first aid and CPR may join the crew for training purposes.

The three line rigs are equipped with Automatic External Defibrilators (AED) which are used to provide lifesaving electrical shocks to the heart of a cardiac arrest victim. This "jumpstart" coupled with CPR and Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic assistance give the heart attack victim the best chance for survival. The Reserve Ambulance serves as a backup when one of the main units is out for repairs, and also serves as support for our Rescue and Special Services teams, delievering personnel and equipment to the incident site.

EMTs also undergo training beyond the EMT program in infectious disease control, hazardous materials recognition and safety, Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) awareness, pediatric emergencies (PEPP), Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and other continuing education programs. On average, the EMTs complete approximately 24 hours of advanced education a year.
